Ammonium Polyphosphate

Ammonium Polyphosphate

Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP) is a high-efficiency, water-soluble phosphorus fertilizer used widely in modern agriculture. It is a polymeric compound formed by the reaction of phosphoric acid and ammonia. APP is unique for its slow-release phosphorus availability and enhanced stability, making it ideal for crops that require consistent phosphorus nutrition throughout their growth stages. It is commonly found in liquid or granular form and is known for improving root development, flowering, and crop yields. APP can also be blended with micronutrients to provide a more balanced and complete nutrient solution, supporting overall plant health and optimal performance.

  • P₂O₅ Content: 10% to 61% (varies with grade)
  • Nitrogen (N): Up to 11%
  • pH (1% solution): 6.0 to 7.5
  • Solubility: Completely soluble in water
  • Heavy Metals: Below permissible limits
  • Conductivity: Moderate, suitable for fertigation and foliar spray
Benefits
  1. Slow-Release Phosphorus: Ammonium Polyphosphate releases phosphorus gradually, ensuring long-term nutrient availability to the crop, particularly during the early and mid-stages of growth.
  2. Enhanced Root Development: Phosphorus is vital for robust root architecture. APP supports early root establishment, enabling crops to absorb water and nutrients more efficiently.
  3. Improved Flowering and Fruit Set: Adequate phosphorus enhances reproductive development in crops, leading to better flowering and fruit setting, especially in fruiting and flowering crops like grapes, tomatoes, and cotton.
  4. Reduces Nutrient Loss: Its polymeric structure makes APP less prone to leaching and fixation in the soil, increasing nutrient use efficiency.
  5. Compatible with Fertigation Systems: Due to its high solubility and clear solution form, APP is widely used in drip and sprinkler irrigation without clogging systems.
  6. Boosts Energy Transfer in Plants: Phosphorus plays a key role in energy-related functions such as ATP synthesis, which is crucial for overall plant metabolism and growth.
  7. Improves Stress Resistance: Regular application of APP improves plant tolerance to environmental stress such as drought or nutrient deficiency.
  8. Multi-Crop Utility: Effective across a wide range of crops, including cereals, vegetables, fruits, pulses, and oilseeds.
  9. Balanced Nitrogen and Phosphorus: The presence of nitrogen in APP enhances early vegetative growth, complementing phosphorus’s role.
  10. Environmentally Sustainable: Lower fixation and controlled release mean reduced application frequency and minimal environmental runoff.
Application
  • Method: Can be applied through fertigation, soil drenching, basal application, or foliar spray depending on crop and growth stage.
  • Dosage (may vary as per formulation and crop):
  • Fertigation: 5–10 kg/acre
  • Foliar Spray: 2–4 g/litre of water
  • Soil Drenching: 10–15 kg/acre
  • Recommended Crops: Vegetables (tomato, chili, brinjal), fruits (grapes, citrus, mango), cereals (wheat, maize, rice), pulses, cotton, and floriculture crops.
Time
  • Ideal to apply Ammonium Polyphosphate during the early vegetative stage to boost root development.
  • Additional applications can be made during pre-flowering and fruit-setting stages to support reproductive growth.
  • For long-duration crops, split applications ensure sustained nutrient availability.
Precaution
  • Always conduct a jar test before mixing with other agrochemicals.
